04/1957 Fulton Elks Again Lead State In Community Youth Program

The Fulton Lodge of Elks for the third straight year was top award among 105 New York State lodges for its outstanding youth program in the community. James R. Hanlon, chairman of the New York State Elks Youth committee announced Thursday.

The new recognition accorded the Fulton Lodge is based on the program of its youth activities committee for the 1956-1957 lodge year. The state honor gives the local organization the opportunity to now compete for the national honors among all Elks lodges. Hanlon said Last year the Fulton lodge finished fourth in the national competition. National honors for youth programs will be announced at the grand lodge convention in July at San Francisco, Calif.

Hanlon said Fulton was selected as the New York State champion in youth week on the basis of a book compiled under the direction of Charles Myers and which reported the activities of the youth committee during the last lodge year. Selection of state winners was made by a committee comprised of <name unreadable> New York State Scholarship chairman and past district deputy Lawrence Taber of  Canandaigua, state vice president of the west central district of the Elks organization and Richard Camp of Wolcott, member of the Wayne County youth bureau. A plaque designating the Fulton lodge as last year’s champion in the youth activity project will be presented Maurice Shapiro, exalted ruler of the lodge during special ceremonies in May in Albany in conjunction with the annual New York State Elks convention.

Fulton’s championship award Hanlon said was based on the diverse program undertaking during the past year which ranged from May Day programs for the youth, a countywide soap box derby, youth band concerts and picnics, basketball promotion for the youth organization, a junior rifle club, a Christmas party for foster children in the county and other projects.

The clubs youth activity committee is currently working on a four day May Day program which will be launched Monday night with a talent show for youth in the high school auditorium and continue through the week with parties for all kindergarten classes in city’s schools, a dance for junior high school pupils, a parade on Saturday, May 4, followed by an afternoon or varied events and competition for youngsters at Recreation Park and climaxed by the second annual Oswego county wide soap box derby on Sunday May 5.
